The latest on Trump’s speech: Why it was his ‘opening shot’

• The fallout continues from Trump’s dangerous anti-voting speech late last week, with Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) calling it the president’s “opening shot” in an attempt to signal his intentions to interfere with the midterm elections.
  
  
• Despite the speech being wild to begin with, there was a chance it could have been even nuttier and filled with more conspiratorial claims.
  
  
• Officials from at least 30 states debunked Trump’s falsities. Some are in the heat of elections while others attempt to quell voter concerns in the lead-up to the midterms.

North Carolina election board again makes it harder to vote by mail

• The GOP-controlled North Carolina State Board of Elections approved new rules today to make it more difficult to vote by mail.
  
  
• The new rules, which passed in a 3-2 vote along party lines, will require voters to submit written attestations to remedy several types of technical envelope “irregularities” with their mail ballots. Previously, ballots with these irregularities were just counted and voters did not need to take any additional action.
