It’s been one week since the Voting Rights Act was gutted and a redistricting push exploded across the South. Here’s where things stand today

• Alabama: “It’s a tragic step backwards for Black Alabama voters.” On day three of its special session, the Alabama House approved its last-minute congressional gerrymander, despite votes already cast in the 2026 primary election.
  
  
• Tennessee: Today was the second day of a special session to eliminate the one remaining Democratic stronghold – Memphis. House and Senate committees could approve the legislation as early as this evening. It would then head to floor votes tomorrow.
  
  
• Louisiana: Today, the Supreme Court denied Black voters’ request to reconsider its Monday order clearing the way for the state to redraw its congressional map. The decision comes after Gov. Jeff Landry (R) suspended the primaries to allow lawmakers to redistrict mid-cycle. On Friday, a legislative committee will hold a hearing on a new map.
  
  
• South Carolina: Today, the House is expected to vote on whether to take up redistricting. They need a supermajority to proceed, which the GOP has in both chambers — though it’s not clear they can muster the votes. This comes after the governor said he would not call a special session.
  
  
• Virginia: We are waiting for the Virginia Supreme Court to determine whether a Democratic-backed redistricting plan and the will of the voters will stand. Yesterday was the deadline for state officials to certify election results... not a good sign.
  
  
• Florida: The GOP gerrymandered map is in effect. We're tracking three lawsuits in response.
