Convicted election denier Tina Peters has been out of prison for just over two months, but she may already have a new job lined up that would allow her to meddle with voting: assistant registrar of voters in Shasta County, California.

Yep, you read that right.

• Shasta Registrar of Voters Clint Curtis, an outspoken election skeptic, said he tapped Peters to replace his current assistant in September.
  
  
• The announcement comes at a time when Peters is traveling the country on a media tour and spreading phony conspiracy theories about voting.
  
  
• Shasta County might seem like an odd place for the Colorado-based Peters, but it’s become a conservative bastion in blue California — and has drawn national scrutiny for trying to buck state voting laws by counting all ballots by hand.
  
  
• The new gig would also position Peters to succeed Curtis, should he resign before his term ends. That isn’t entirely out of the realm of possibility, given that Curtis faced censure by the board last week for threats, verbal abuse and retaliatory acts against employees. Seems like a stand-up guy.

Peters, who previously served as the GOP clerk in Mesa County, Colorado, was convicted in 2024 after prosecutors showed she facilitated  unauthorized access to the county’s voting equipment and helped compromise sensitive system data — actions driven by false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump.

And now she’ll work with voting equipment in a capacity that could affect election outcomes again. Fun!

• “I’d thought she would get a spot in the Trump admin,” Stephen Richer, a former Republican Maricopa County Recorder and Cato Institute scholar, noted. “But her impact here will be more direct.”
  
  
• “This should be stopped immediately,” Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) said. “Americans – and Californians – deserve nothing but safe, secure, and free elections – without political interference and partisan loyalists beholden to Trump.”

That’s how Michigan anti-voting activist Ramon Jackson describes dilapidated houses in Detroit that he claims Democrats are somehow using to steal elections in the trailer for anti-voting group True the Vote’s new conspiracy-heavy documentary. If you’re not familiar with the lingo, a “trap house” is slang for a building used to sell or use drugs.

Scott Presler made a name for himself by stumping hard for MAGA’s anti-voting agenda: the SAVE America Act, voter roll purges and annoying the shit out of Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.).

But Presler’s efforts to influence voters in last year’s high-stakes Pennsylvania Supreme Court retention elections may have landed him in hot water. Specifically, violating state campaign finance laws. The nonprofit consumer advocacy organization Public Citizen filed a complaint against Presler with the Pennsylvania Department of State last week.

• Presler, who founded the political action committee Early Vote Action (EVA), allegedly ran a coordinated operation to encourage Pennsylvania voters to “vote no” on retaining three Democratic Supreme Court justices, but never registered or disclosed any spending.
  
  
• “Presler and EVA spent money on paid field staff, digital media, direct mail, and voter-contact texting,” the complaint states. “This paid electoral activity was coordinated with public calls to action in multimedia platforms, including print advertisements and social media as well as being promoted in national and local media appearances by Presler and Early Vote Action.”
  
  
• And did Presler disclose any of that? You bet he didn’t. And is that a violation of Pennsylvania law? Public Citizen says it is. We’ll see what Pennsylvania says.
  
  
• Presler did not respond to Democracy Docket’s request for comment.
