Donald Trump has never been more unpopular. Between his failed ballroom, the never-ending war in Iran, and his corruption-fueled term in office, the president’s approval rating has been slipping lower and lower. And this week, it hit an all-time low at 33 percent.

At this point, Trump would lose a popularity contest to Ted Cruz — famously the most hated man in the Senate.

Trump isn’t blind to his unpopularity. You can be sure that he is paying close attention to his poll numbers — especially among his base. The percentage of Republicans who “strongly approve” of Trump’s performance dropped by 20 points to 48 percent.

If you are trying to win fair and square, these aren’t the numbers you want to see less than three months out from the midterm elections. But, of course, Trump never does anything by the rules.

Instead, Trump is doing everything he can to make it harder for you to vote and easier for him to cheat.

Trump and the White House are pushing a statistically dodgy U.S. Census Bureau report that claims thousands of noncitizens voted in the 2020 election. To put it simply, the report is a sham. It relies on an incomplete commercial voter file and inaccurate record-matching methods.

The truth is irrelevant to Trump. He wants to sow doubt about our elections, wipe a loss from his record, and find an excuse to insist on new voting restrictions — including the stalled SAVE America Act. Spreading lies about the Census Bureau report gives him that excuse.

“The Census Bureau has begun checking the Voter Records from 2020 against their Citizenship Records. On the first 128,000,000 Voters, the Census Bureau proves that over 24,000 Noncitizens voted illegally!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I WON THE ELECTION! We must pass THE SAVE AMERICA ACT.”

It’s important that we call these lies out for exactly what they are. Likewise, it’s critical we combat them with accurate information. There are very few, rare instances of noncitizen voting. This is not a widespread danger, and the administration's insistence otherwise is nothing more than propaganda and fear mongering.

That’s something we need to keep pointing out.
