Florida house votes against recessing to consider SCOTUS Callais decision

The Florida House of Representatives passed an aggressively gerrymandered congressional map Wednesday, part of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ (R) dash to redistrict despite a voter-approved ban in the state constitution that prohibits partisan gerrymandering.

The 83-28 vote, which came amid what appeared to be jeers from the gallery, was taken just an hour after the U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling that makes it all but impossible to use the Voting Rights Act to block gerrymanders targeting racial minorities.

 

The ruling could make it easier for Florida’s new map to survive the expected court challenges. DeSantis had made clear when he released the new congressional map that he anticipated the high court ruling as it did. 

 

The state Senate is expected to pass the new map shortly, before it heads to DeSantis’ desk.
