Colorado’s governor said he might free convicted election denier Tina Peters if she showed remorse. She’s trying, but it sure doesn’t sound too convincing. Also in this week’s Eye On The Right: A key President Donald Trump ally behind the emergency elections draft order reveals the loony conspiracy theory motivating his effort, and more.

Colorado governor said Tina Peters would need to apologize to grant her clemency — her lawyer’s ‘apology’ is a joke

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) recently signaled he could grant clemency to convicted election denier Tina Peters, who is serving time for her role in a breach of voting machines. But Polis said Peters would have to show remorse for her crime.

  • So: Is Peters sorry? She’s trying, but it sure doesn’t sound too convincing. “We can’t reveal what Tina’s true feelings are about her actions and why she did what she did, and what part of that she regrets, because she could have made a different decision,” one of her lawyers told a conservative radio host. “But yeah, she, of course, anyone has second thoughts about what they’ve done, and in that respect, has remorse.”

  • Meanwhile several elected officials slammed Polis for considering clemency for Peters. Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold (D) said Peters “should get no special treatment” from Polis. Sen. Michael Bennet (D), Rep. Jason Crow (D), Attorney General Phil Weiser (D), and Mesa County District Attorney Dan Rubenstein (R) — who prosecuted Peters — all urged Polis not to free her.

Key Trump ally behind emergency elections order reveals loony conspiracy theory motivating his effort

Speaking of Peters, her attorney Peter Ticktin is one of the key figures who is said to be coordinating with the White House to push Trump to take control of elections via executive order. Ticktin recently spoke at a conference of election deniers where he cited a bizarre 2020 conspiracy theory involving Michigan voting machines as the emergency that justifies the scheme. Buckle up.

  • At a confab at the Trump International Golf Club in Palm Beach, Florida, Ticktin said Trump should sign an executive order to take over voting machines, because machines in Antrim County, Michigan flipped votes from Trump to Joe Biden in the 2020 election.

  • The unofficial results of the 2020 election in Antrim County were initially reported incorrectly. But an investigation launched by the Michigan secretary of state’s office found it was caused by human error — not because of issues with the county’s voting equipment.

  • “The weaponization that we’ve seen in the past is going to be just a taste of what’s coming in the future,” Ticktin told the gathering of anti-voting activists. “And so this is the most important topic that I speak of at this time, because all of our fates are up for grabs right now, if those machines are allowed to be used in the 2026 midterms.”

Notes from the Twilight Zone

  • ICYMI: A lawyer for the U.S. Election Assistance Commission was said to brief Cleta Mitchell’s group as it pushed proof of citizenship, Democracy Docket revealed.

  • Peter’s poems: In addition to representing some of the worst people on the right, Ticktin writes poetry. It’s, uh, interesting.

  • Valentina Gomez, a far-right conspiracy theorist who recently lost her Texas congressional primary election, is claiming the election was rigged — and said she has video evidence. “If I publish this video, they will send me to prison because it involves the VOTING MACHINES,” she said on social media. Gomez got just over 10% of the votes in her election, BTW.

  • The recently released tax filings of the Conservative Partnership Institute — the far-right political group led by Mitchell and former Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows — show that its budget grew by 50% in 2024. 👀

  • A federal judge ruled that notorious election denier Kari Lake unlawfully tried to dismantle Voice of America.
