Virginia voters get the chance to counter GOP gerrymander

  • The Supreme Court of Virginia cleared the way for voters to weigh in on a constitutional amendment that could allow the state to redraw its congressional map. If approved, the new map would add several Democratic-leaning districts, countering GOP gerrymanders nationwide. The referendum vote is scheduled April 21 and early voting is already underway. 

Idaho’s Republican elections chief rejects DOJ voter data demand

  • Idaho’s secretary of state, Phil McGrane (R), refused the DOJ’s request for the state’s unredacted voter rolls, citing recent federal court rulings rejecting similar demands. Idaho joins a growing list of red states pushing back against the Trump DOJ’s nationwide effort

SCOTUS rejects bid to weaponize pro-voter law

  • The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear two cases brought by an anti-voting group seeking to weaken the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA). The group argued the law should be reinterpreted to require far more aggressive voter purges. By declining to weigh in, the justices preserved the long-standing pro-voting interpretation of the NVRA.

Trump fires Kristi Noem as homeland security secretary

  • Trump announced he will remove Kristi Noem as head of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) following bipartisan criticism of her performance during contentious Senate hearings. Trump said he intends to nominate election denier Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R) to lead DHS, though the move still requires Senate confirmation. 

House committee votes to subpoena Bondi over Epstein files

  • The Republican-led House Oversight Committee voted to subpoena Pam Bondi over the DOJ's failure to fully release records related to convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. The vote signals growing bipartisan frustration in Congress and increases pressure on the administration to fully release the remaining documents.
